The Iowa Tamil Association proudly boasts a dedicated membership comprising families residing within the state of Iowa. Our events consistently draw substantial attendance, with each event attracting over 300 participants.
In the year 2023-2024, the Iowa Tamil Association is strategically planning to organize three significant events.
Deepathiruvizha, also known as Deepa Oli or Diwali, is a festival of lights celebrated in the autumn season. It stands as one of India's most revered festivals, symbolizing the spiritual triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.
Light serves as a powerful metaphor for knowledge and consciousness. The Iowa Tamil Association (ITA) organizes an annual Deepa Thiruvizha event during the months of October or November. Stay tuned to this space for forthcoming details about the event. In the meantime, here are some glimpses from previous year's festivities.
Pongal is a harvest festival celebrated in south India in celebration of farmers and farm animals' contributions to the larger society! Jallikattu events are conducted in various places during the month of Thai.
ITA's 2023 Pongal event is planned with an objective to bring the Iowa Tamil community together to celebrate Pongal in the traditional way. Various games and events have been planned to provide fun filled entertainment for all age groups virtually:
Chithirai Thiruvizha is a spring time festival that marks the dawn of Tamil New Year and the first month of the Tamil calendar - Chithirai. ITA conducts this event in April/May every year. The event is filled with stage performances of community members and provides an excellent opportunity to the younger generation to stay in touch with their Tamil roots.
